The 4,500-square-foot center atCrissey Field State Park is partof a40-acre park with 15 acres of oceanshore. The facility is ashowcase ofsustainable features designed toreduce impacts to theenvironment,including solar panels, waterlessurinals and pipes madeof recycledplastic. The center includes areception area, indoor and24-houroutdoor public restrooms and officespace. It opened inDecember 2009.

The building offers plenty ofparking and views of thePacificOcean. Several trails lead visitors tothe beach or thenearby WinchuckRiver.

The center is also the new home forthe U.S. Forest Serviceoffice, TravelOregon, the Oregon state travel

agency, and the Oregon Parks andRecreation Department.

Forest Service office hours arefrom 8:30 a.m. to 12:30 p.m. and1:30p.m. to 4:30 p.m., Monday throughFriday.

The annual Fourth of July Festival isa traditional small-towncelebration thatdraws a big crowd.

Thousands of people show up inCrescent City each year forthefestivities, including a downtownparade (starts at 10 a.m.) thatlast yearattracted 95 entries.

Activities continue along thewaterfront all day duringtheBeachfront Fair, featuring vendorbooths, live music, Pastels inthe Park,Cow Chip Bingo, Rubber Ducky racesand lots more for allages.

A massive fireworks show beginsshortly after 9 p.m. over theBatteryPoint Lighthouse, with the bestviewing locations beingfromBeachfront Park, Howe Drive, Whaler

KITE FESTIVAL INBROOKINGS HARBOROne of the most anticipatedsummer

festivals in Brookings is the annualSouthern Oregon KiteFestival at thePort of Brookings Harbor.

This years event is scheduled for10 a.m. to 4 p.m. July16-17.

The spectacular kite festival willfeature two full days ofworld-renowned kite flyers who performindividual and team routinesset tomusic. Thousands of visitors andlocals will find plenty offood andmerchandise offered by more than adozen vendors.

Harris Beach at the north end ofBrookings is another favoritespot, asis Lone Ranch Beach about anotherthree miles north. Thewind alwaysseems to be blowing at Pistol River,located half-waybetween Brookingsand Gold Beach, as well as the beachfronting thecity of Gold Beach itself.

More than 100 fine artists and crafts-men will be selling theirwork at the 17thannual Brookings Harbor Festival of theArts on Aug.6-7 at the Port of BrookingsHarbor, 10 a.m. to 5 p.m. bothdays.

Artists from around the Western Unit-ed States will be offeringpaintings in allmedia, photography, pottery, ceramics,jewelry,beadwork, metal sculpture, stainedglass, woodwork, fabric art andfurniture.

The festival takes place on the board-walk at the port, whichhas dozens ofunique retail shops, services, restaurantsand lodgingfacilities. Artist demonstra-tions will be held periodically and afreeChildrens Art Activity Corner will be pro-vided by the ChetcoCommunity Public Li-

brary.Free entertainment will be provided

and food will be available through vendorsand portrestaurants.

The reputation of the show has spreadfar and wide andapplications are request-ed by hundreds of artisans. It is ajuriedshow, filled with unique and original artsand crafts, and thecommittee reviewsphotographs of the work and booths ofallparticipants to ensure a balanced showwith highest quality items.No manufac-tured, assembled, or consumable itemsare accepted.
