Mushroom Recipes FAQs

What are button mushrooms?

Button mushrooms, or white mushrooms, are the most common variety of mushrooms and can be found at almost any grocery store or market. Varying in size, they can be small or over an inch in diameter.
Agaricus bisporus, the scientific name, is an edible basidiomycete mushroom native to grasslands in Europe and North America.

Types of Mushrooms

White mushrooms are actually the same variety of mushrooms as crimini and portobello. Crimini and portobello mushrooms are left to grow a little longer than white mushrooms.
This gives them their rich color and flavor, while Portobello Mushrooms are grown the longest to become large and dense with a meaty flavor.

How do you store Mushrooms?

Fresh mushrooms can be stored in a brown paper bag in the refrigerator for up to five days.

Can raw mushrooms be frozen?

We don’t recommend it. Just freezing them raw could result in the mushrooms becoming mushy once thawed.

Can cooked mushrooms be frozen?

Absolutely. I love making a large batch and keeping them in the freezer to add to some of my favorite dishes. Once cooked and cooled, you can add them to Ziploc baggies with the date and freeze the mushrooms for up to 6 months. They are so convenient to have on hand! Use your handy frozen recipes with mushrooms to add to soups, stews, and sauces.

Made this for dinner and it was very good. Only one thing I would say is not to salt the mushrooms until after they have carmelized. Salting before they brown up a bit makes them watery.
